As we only had one night in NYC, we decided we should splurge a little and stay somewhere truly lovely. After a little research, we settled upon The Bowery Hotel , which is located Downtown Lower East Side.
In a historic, boutique-filled neighbourhood, the hotel enjoys a fantastic location. Away from the hubbub of mid-town, it has a relaxed, quieter feel, all whilst enjoying views of the Empire State Building. Close to Greenwich Village; Soho; Bleeker Street and Spring Street, there are lots of great places to eat and shop nearby, whilst avoiding the standard generic chains that litter places like Time Square.
We arrived on an extremely windy, rainy day, but staff still came out immediately to help us with our bags and check-in. They were nothing but polite and courteous as soon as we arrived.
Check-in is next to the hotel’s main lounge, which is beautiful. Filled with old, vintage furniture and a huge roaring fire, it had a cosy, festive feel. Unlike some chic boutique hotels, this is genuinely warm and welcoming.
We were shown to our room (we opted for the King option) and were excited the moment we walked in. With two floor-to-ceiling windows, with one looking directly onto the Empire State Building, and a huge big bathtub with a view of it too, this room has spectacular views. The bed was enormous and so comfortable (we had been staying on an inflatable mattress at our brother’s in DC, so the contrast was fairly noticeable!) and we had a nice big dressing area. The bathroom was beautiful with lots of small details – vintage, old-fashioned toiletries and bronze bath fittings. It all added to the boutique feel of the hotel.
Shortly after arriving, there was a knock at the door and we were delivered a bottle of wine and a card. We started to get excited. We opened the card, which was from the hotel, and read the message, which said we had our very own Bo Bear – the Bowery’s famous bear – waiting for us. We were now jumping-up-and-down excited. We found our bear waiting inside our mini bar and quickly unwrapped him. As we said in our last blog, it’s these smaller exciting moments that make travelling so fantastic. Complete with our free bottle of wine and new bear, we had a quick rest on our bed and ate our body weight in M&M’s. Thank you Bowery!
We ate in the hotel’s restaurant, ‘Gemma’, twice. The food was incredible, especially breakfast. We loaded up on French Toast and Eggs Benedict, all whilst sat in a cosy corner of this fairy-light filled restaurant. Like the hotel, it has a really welcoming, warm feeling, filled with vintage fittings and quirky decorations.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Bowery and would recommend it for anyone looking for somewhere a little quieter to stay (and fancies treating themselves!).
